KITCHEN IDEAS
A well-equipped, beautifully
dressed kitchen provides both a sense of well-being and a favorite
place in the home.
The
kitchen is the second most costly room, per square foot, in your home,
after bathrooms, and is worth a significant investment, but there are
ways to cut costs, bringing your purse and your dreams together with a
plan that is agreeable to both!
Re-evaluate each cost estimate.
Be sure there is nothing you have overlooked.
Consider what items you might
be willing to negotiate compromise or eliminate.

Cut Flower Tip: Make
greenery last longer, cut fresh greenery in the early morning or
evening while it is moist and immediately submerge greenery in water
after cutting. If
you are not using greens (fresh picked or bought) immediately, smash
the end of each branch with a hammer and return to water until needed:
this keeps the veins open to absorb water.

DO
YOU HAVE AN FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN PREPARED?
Your Family
Disaster Plan
- Meet
with your family and discuss why you need to prepare for disaster.
Explain the dangers of fire, severe weather, and earthquakes to
children. Plan to share responsibilities and work together as a team.
- Discuss the types
of disasters that are most likely to happen. Explain what to do in each
case.
- Pick two places
to meet:
- Right outside
your home in case of a sudden emergency, like a fire.
- Outside your
neighborhood in case you can't return home. Everyone must know the
address and phone number.
- Ask
an out-of-state friend to be your "family contact." After a disaster,
it's often easier to call long distance. Other family members should
call this person and tell them where they are. Everyone must know your
contact's phone number.
- Discuss what to
do in an evacuation. Plan how to take care of your pets.
Family Checklist
- Post emergency
telephone numbers by phones (fire, police, ambulance, etc.).
- Teach children
how and when to call 9-1-1 or your local Emergency Medical Services
number for emergency help.
- Show each family
member how and when to turn off the utilities (water, gas, and
electricity) at the main switches.
- Check if you have
adequate insurance coverage. More.....

When it comes to the roof of your home, the rule of thumb is to "walk

The

Pets offer a
therapeutic and non-threatening strategy to reduce stress. |
Heartworms
are very real, "they can make
your pets cough", and they can
kill your pet.
Dogs
and Cats
are at an increased risk of contracting heartworm in the summer.
Heartworms are passed by mosquitoes Every time a mosquito bites your
dog or cat; it may pass tiny little worms into the blood of your pet.
These tiny baby worms travel in your pet's bloodstream all the way to
the heart. When the worms get to the pet’s heart, they settle in and
grow into adult worms, and start having families of their own. Once the
heart gets filled up with worms, it can no longer properly pump blood,
when the restriction becomes large enough due to more worms in the
pumping area, your pet will start feeling sick. many times, he will
have a cough because when the heart can't pump blood the right way,
liquids can get "backed-up" in the lungs. occasionally the heart gets
to overwhelmed with the worms, that they will move into the lung, which
will bring on coughing.
Should
your pets heart get to crowded with heartworms, sadly, there is not
much you can do. It is a must that pet owners begin a program
prescribed by your vet early on to prevent heartworms from the start!
It is something that is so easy to do, and it can save your pets life!
All you have to do is give your pet heartworm medicine once a month. It
is that easy. You just need to know about how much your pet weighs to
get them heartworm medicine. If your pet is older than six months
and has never had heartworm medicine, you should talk to your
veterinarian about heartworm testing and what you should do.
Taking
monthly heartworm medicine prevents most other kinds of worms that your
pet can get. Consequently, this will keep your pet feeling good, and
will keep them from carrying other kinds of worms that they can pass to
people and other animals.
This is one of the best ways to
show them how much you love them. More...........

A
Cat is sharing its home
with you and whether cats are completely domesticated is questionable.
A dog on the other hand is quite domesticated and thinks it is great to
live with you, in your home
(in particular, inside). Dog's smile with their tails, and occasionally
they appear to actually smile, ask any dog owner, he/she thinks theirs
does? |
Tail Wagging
The Dog and Cat.
When a dog wag's its tail, it's telling all, (the bigger the dog, the
more danger to nearby items on the coffee table), that it is happy. A
cat's tail has various meanings, as its tail is an extension of its
feelings, as well as a warning of the cat’s intentions. Normally the
higher the tail, the better the mood. A happy cat will hold its tail
straight up, while in fear, it will tuck the tail between the legs,
just like a dog does.
A
broad swishing indicates annoyance, while twitches are a sign of
curiosity and excitement, as when it is ready to pounce on prey. For
example, the cat who decides it's had enough petting will signal by
swishing the tail in impatience. If you continue, a bat with the paw
generally follows. The batting is an act of aggression indicating your
cat's agitation. More.....

Carry this poem with you in your purse

will definitely help. Please share it with others.
"Peace"
With eager heart and will on fire,
I fought to win my great desire.
"Peace shall be mine, " I said; but life
Grew bitter in the weary strife.
My soul
was tired, and my pride
Was wounded deep: to Heaven I cried,
"God grant me peace or I must die,"
The dumb stars glittered no reply.
Broken
at last, I bowed my head,
Forgetting all myself, and said,
"Whatever comes, His will be done,"
And in that moment peace was won.

It is very easy - you can use your own photos, favorite clip-art, or
make simply make up your own designs. Use any brand of sticker paper,
such as Avery. There are numerous colors available, white, gold,
silver, etc. Making your own custom stickers is easy! Simply set
up a page (the best method is to use a blank white sticker page for
your set-up, of whatever designs you want for your stickers, print them
out on your colored sticker paper, let the ink (ideally 20-30 minutes)
dry, and then cut apart, or peel as needed.. You peel away the back
cover and you can apply them to anything. It is very rare that the
ink will run, of so, a possible solution is to spray it with a

When
a freezer is too full, the air vent may become blocked, preventing the

A little history:
Thomas Alva Edison Invents the Phonograph
"Mary
had a little lamb" were the first words that Edison recorded on
the phonograph and he was amazed when he heard the machine play them
back to him. In 1878, Edison established the Edison Speaking Phonograph
Company to sell the new machine.
Edison suggested other uses for the phonograph, such as: letter writing
and dictation, phonographic books for blind people, a family record
(recording family members in their own voices), music boxes and toys,
clocks that announce the time, and a connection with the telephone so
communications could be recorded. How many of these uses have become a
reality today?
He is also reponsible for the Incandenscent light bulb, film, movie
camera and hundreds more.

EXERCISING
MAKE IT A HABIT!
|
There is no way getting around it - exercising is one of the key
ingredients of healthy aging and contributes to both physical and
mental health. Aerobic and strength training impacts every cell of
one's body, thus helping to reduce aging.
Suggestions:
Aerobic Activity - perform moderate-intensity aerobic activity for a
minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days a week, or vigorous-intensity aerobic
activity for 20 minutes- 3 days per week. Combinations of moderate and
vigorous activity may be performed to meet these suggested guidelines.
Resistance Exercise - engage in a muscle strengthening activity as
least twice a week on non-consecutive days. This exercise should
involve the major muscle groups and resistance weight that allows 10-15
repetitions for each exercise with a moderate to high effort.
Flexibility - engage in exercises that increase flexibility on at least
two days a week for 10 minutes.
Balance - Older adults who face a substantial risk from falls should
perform exercises that maintain or improve balance, such as yoga or tai
chi. Older adults with chronic conditions or low fitness levels should
work with their healthcare provider to develop an exercise plan
Exercising:
Helps you maintain a normal weight by increasing your metabolism.
Reduces your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis,
diabetes and obesity.
Keeps joints, tendons and ligaments flexible so it's easier to move
about.
Reduces 'Some' of the effects of aging, contributing to your mental
well-being and helps fight depression.
Helps relieve stress and anxiety.
Increases your energy and endurance.
Walking:
is an aerobic and weight-bearing (works against the force of
gravity) exercise, so it is good for your heart and helps prevent
osteoporosis. More....

CHOLESTEROL 101

cholesterol to less than 200 mg per day; and exercising at least 30
minutes a day at least five (5) days a week. This could include aerobic
activities like a brisk walk, swimming or tennis. Before you begin a
exercise regime, you should always check with your healthcare provider
first.
Occasionally this will not bring down your LDL and at that point you
will need a cholesterol-lowering drug.
One way to deal with bad cholesterol is to visit a registered
dietitian; here you will get some sound advice about how to shape up
your eating habits, according to a new national study led by University
of Michigan Health System researchers. Almost half of those in this
study reduced bad cholesterol at least 15 percent.
Not only are you likely to lower your cholesterol levels, you may be
able to avoid having to take cholesterol medication, or having to
increase your dose if you're already taking one. And most likely will
lose weight in the process, which also helps your heart. More..

BLOOD
PRESSURE
Taking your blood pressure at
home can helpl your doctor get a more accurate picture of your true
blood pressure over time
Many people have "white coat hypertension." Their blood pressure foes
up in the doctor's office because of nervousness.
If you take your blood pressure at home:
- Have your doctor check your
monitor for accuracy and show you how to properly use it.
- Real
and follow all instructions included with the monitor, such as where to
place the cuff and where to put your are while taking the reading.
- Take your blood pressure at
certain times of the day for consistency.
- Show your log of daily blood
pressure readings to your doctor.
- Make certain it fits. Thin
adults and Children may need a smaller cuff. Adults with large arms may
need a bigger cuff.
Normal blood pressure is below
120/80. A reading above 140/90 is high blood pressure and needs
treatment.
Getting
regular exercise; losing even a small amount of weight; eating less
salt, fat, and cholesterol; limiting alcohol to no more than one drink
per day for women or two drinks per day for men; and reducing stress
may help lower blood pressure. In some cases, prescription medications
may be necessary.
Bananas and other foods high inpotassium but low in sodium can help you
control blood pressure.
Most
fruits and vegetables contain potassium. Exceptionally good sources are
cantaloupe, *grapefruit juice, honeydew melon, nectarines, prunes and
prune juice, raisins, beans, unsalted tomato juice, and baked or boiled
otatoes with the skins. Avocados are another excellent source, but they
are high in fat and calories.
.
(*Grapefruit juice can interffere
with some prescription medications. Check with your doctor or
pharmacist if this could be a problem.) more.....

Vision
Eye Protection
Because
the eye is such an important and complex part of our body, we have many
features which protect the eye. The eyebrows are the strips of hair
above your eyes which prevent sweat from running into them. Eyelashes
help keep the eye clean by collecting small dirt and dust particles
floating through the air. The eyelashes also protect the eye from the
sun's and other light's glare. The eyelids sweep dirt from the surface
of the eye. The eyelid also protects the eye from injury. Tears are
sterile drops of clean water which constantly bathe the front of the
eye, keeping it clean and moist.

ANEMIA
If you have anemia,
your blood does not carry enough oxygen to the rest of your body. The
most common cause of anemia is not having enough iron. Your body needs
iron to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives
the red color to blood. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of
the body.
Your iron might be
too low because of heavy periods, pregnancy, ulcers, excessive
bleeding, colon polyps, colon cancer, inherited disorders or a diet
that does not have enough iron. You can also get anemia from not
getting enough folic acid or vitamin B 12. Blood disorders such as
sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, or cancer may also lead to anemia.
The body also has a
remarkable ability to compensate for early anemia. If your anemia is
mild or developed over a long period of time, you may not notice any
symptoms More.....

Autism
Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
What
is autism spectrum disorder screening?
Autism
spectrum disorder (ASD)
is a disorder of the brain that affects a person's behavior, communication,
and social skills. The disorder usually shows up in the first two years
of life. ASD is called a "spectrum" disorder because there is a wide
range of symptoms. Autism symptoms can range from mild to severe. Some
children with ASD may never be able to function without support from
parents and caregivers. Others need less support and may eventually
live independently.
- Difficulty with
communication and interaction with other people
- Restricted interests
and repetitive behaviors
- Symptoms that hurt
the person’s ability to function properly in school, work, and other
areas of life
ASD
screening is the first step in diagnosing the disorder. While there is
no cure for ASD, early treatment can help reduce autism symptoms and
improve quality of life. More....

BALANCE EXERCISES
Balance exercise: Do some or all of these exercises every day for best
results. For those with balance problems initially, have someone
standing nearby to support you if you are concerned you might fall,
especially for the ones where you’re closing your eyes, since this is
the most challenging. Speak with your doctor before doing these
exercises if you have a beyond normal balance problems.
- Stork: One of the simplest exercises to improve balance is to stand
on one leg, keep your arms at your side with your shoulders relaxed,
and try to balance for 30 seconds. Repeat one to two times with each
leg every day. Over the next few weeks, try to work up to two minutes.
To make the stork more challenging, try swinging your arms like you're
running. That will throw you slightly off balance and you will need to
make corrections to maintain your balance. You can hold your water
bottle or mini-weights in each hand for even more of a challenge.
Another way to make the stork more challenging is to fold a bath towel
over several times so it's five to six layers thick. Now place it on
the floor and stand in the center of it. It will be unstable because
it's soft, but that's the idea because you want to really work hard to
improve your balance and strengthen your muscles. And for the most
challenge of all, try doing the stork with your eyes closed.
-Nose toucher: Stand with your right leg approximately 24 inches in
front of your left, bend your knees slightly, and try to touch your
nose with your finger. The more in line your feet with each other the
more challenging this will be. Once you can do it well with either leg
in front of the other, try this with your eyes closed.
-Heel raises: Hold on to a sturdy chair for balance and rise up on to
your tippy toes. Repeat 10-15 times. You can progress to touching the
chair with one finger for balance, then eventually no holding at all,
and finally with your eyes closed.
-Marching: Hold on to a sturdy chair for balance, and lift your right
knee up toward your chest, then lower to starting positions. The left
knee can be bent slightly. Repeat 10-15 times with the right leg, and
then do the left leg. You can progress to touching the chair with one
finger for balance, then eventually no holding at all, and finally with
your eyes closed. You can also try alternating the marching between
left and right leg instead of one set with one leg. More.....

“Made in the USA” claims can be
“unqualified” or “qualified.” Unqualified means that “all or virtually
all” significant parts and processing are of U.S. origin. The product
may contain a small amount of foreign ingredients if they’re not
significant—the knobs of a barbecue grill, for instance. Companies must

When
used incorrectly, pesticides can pollute water. They also kill
beneficial as well as harmful insects. Natural alternatives prevent
both of these events from occurring and save you money. Consider using
natural alternatives for chemical pesticides: Non-detergent
insecticidal soaps, garlic, hot pepper sprays, 1 teaspoon of liquid
soap in a gallon of water, used dishwater, or forceful stream of water
to dislodge insects.
Also
consider using plants that naturally repel insects. These plants have
their own chemical defense systems, and when planted among flowers and
vegetables, they help keep unwanted insects away. The table below
contains a partial list of nature's alternatives.

The United States produces a large share of the
petroleum it consumes, but it uses imports to help supply domestic and
international markets
In 2019, the United States produced about 19.25 million
barrels per day (MMb/d) of petroleum, and it consumed about 20.46
MMb/d. Imports from other countries help to supply domestic demand for
petroleum. Some of the crude oil that the U.S. imports is refined by
U.S. refineries into petroleum products (such as gasoline, heating oil,
diesel fuel, and jet fuel) that the U.S. exports. Some of imported
petroleum may be stored and subsequently exported.

Solar Energy
Industry
and Science must develop a method of continued storage of solar energy,
in forms other than batteries. Perhaps in the form of a chemical that
can be accessed at a later date, perhaps in the form of a different
type of molecule.
Solar Thermal
Power systems
This
method is obtained by magnifying the sun’s heat, directing it
onto fluid-filled pipes, heating the fluid to boiling point.
The
super-hot liquid is then used to power a turbine generator. You may be
familiar with solar cells, which create electricity when photons from
the sun force the transfer of electrons between layers of material.
Solar trough plants, on the other hand, involve no chemical reactions.
They utilize an array of mirrors to direct solar heat to a central
pipeline filled with water. One square mile of such collectors
could provide power for more than 100,000 homes. Unfortunately, once
again the problem arises when solar energy is not available, as the
providers are forced to utilize other sources of energy.
This
is a downside, but at least it provides for a reduction in Petroleum
use, and every bit count’s.
Solar technologies are
characterized as either passive or active depending on the way they
capture, convert and distribute sunlight and enable solar energy to be
harnessed at different levels around the world, mostly depending on the
distance from the equator. Although solar energy refers primarily to
the use of solar radiation for practical ends, all renewable energies,
other than Geothermal power and Tidal power, derive their energy either
directly or indirectly from the Sun. more.....
